Consulting

There are some services available that don't necessarily fall under an ongoing instructional arrangement.  While this range of consultation services can be included in things like lessons and workshops, there are times when a particular need arises on a one-time or limited basis.

Custom Musical Arrangement

This is a very wide open creative service.  It can include things like tune selection, transposition and arrangements, harmonies, building sets of complementary tunes, and anything else related to designing a custom repertoire and style for both competitive and performance selections. Even while I was attending St. John's Northwestern Military Academy I was allowed to help pick out music for the band. I take great pride in my arranging and especially the harmonies. Since the early days of the band I have written harmonies and arranged melodic transitions. I have a large library of existing traditional and modern music, a collection of my arrangements of existing tunes, as well as my own original compositions or the opportunity to have a new tune composed.  Anything is possible!

Practice and Competition Recordings

This service is valuable for solo pipers, bands, performing groups ... and solo drummers!

I am happy to record single tunes, MSRs, medleys, or any variety of musical selection you need.

  • As a solo piper, you might want to learn a tune or set of tunes, but not have a good example recording to study and play with during your practice. This solves the problem of scouring YouTube and only finding other groups or soloists.
  • As a band or performing group, having high quality of recordings of your repertoire is crucial to ensuring all players are practicing the same way, and to the same standard, between rehearsals.
  • As a solo drummer, especially those in areas without a lot of experienced pipers, you might want a quality recording of your solo tunes not only for practice but also to accompany you in competition if your location pipe band association permits it.

Performance Setup

This is a focus on competition and performances. Since my early days in the Chicago Scots, I have quickly taken to being the "Sound Guy." A band's successes are revolved around technique, and sound. It's difficult to blow your bagpipe correctly when the chanter isn't balanced correctly. It's also difficult to tune someone who hasn't quite mastered the art of keeping steady pressure; a Catch 22. Reed manipulation and tuning are the main to-do's on the day of a contest. Having set up the Scots for many events and contests, I know how what needs to be done to ensure the highest quality of note-for-note trueness, harmonic blending of the chanter and drones, and being able to work with the weather conditions!
